What You’ll Need for Perfect Oven Roasted Prime Rib

Pro Tip: If this is your first time preparing oven roasted prime rib, and you’re unsure how much you’ll need, a good rule of thumb is to serve one pound per person. That way, you’ll be sure to have enough beef for everyone, and if you’re lucky, you’ll have some leftovers for sandwiches the next day! The recipe below is for a 6 – 8 pound oven-roasted prime rib.

- 1 Premium Quality Texas Beef Prime Rib (at least one pound per person)
- 1/2 cup barbecue sauce (use your favorite)
- 1/2 cup Kosher salt
- 1/2 cup cracked black pepper
- 1/4 cup garlic powder
- 1/4 cup chili powder

How to Make Perfect Oven Roasted Prime Rib
Once you’ve gathered all the ingredients, the steps are simple but make sure you set aside enough time, so start early. It’s essential that you bring the beef up to room temperature before you cook it. Otherwise, it won’t cook evenly.
- Take the beef out of the fridge three hours before you’re ready to start cooking your perfect oven-roasted prime rib.
- Massage an even coating of barbecue sauce over the beef. This will help the seasoning stick.
- Mix the salt and spices in a small bowl and generously rub the seasoning on EVERY surface of the prime rib.
- Place the seasoned meat on a roasting rack on a sheet pan or similar setup, and let it come to room temperature for AT LEAST 3 hours. Don’t skip this step!
- After three hours, or when the prime rib has come to room temperature, preheat the oven to 200 F.
- Place the roasting pan in the oven and roast for about 4 hours. To hit medium-rare, you’re shooting for the prime rib to reach an internal temperature of 120 F. To avoid under or over-cooking the meat, use a thermometer. There are
- Once you’ve hit 120 F, remove the beef from the oven and crank the heat up to 500 F.
- When the oven reaches 500 F, put the roast back in and cook until the outside is nicely browned and crisp. This should take about 15 minutes.
- Remove the meat from the oven and transfer it to a cutting board. Let it rest for at least 15 minutes before slicing to serve.
